Elon Musk’s Focus Shifts as He Reduces Government Role Amid Tesla Struggles

Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur and CEO of Tesla, is reducing his involvement with the U.S. Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to dedicate more time to his electric car company. In a recent meeting with Tesla investors, Musk confirmed that he will significantly scale back his work at DOGE, starting in May, in order to refocus on Tesla’s operations and future growth.

Musk’s statement marks a pivotal shift in his professional commitments. Initially, Musk had been involved in advising the U.S. government on improving efficiency within its operations. However, starting next month, his engagement with DOGE will be limited to just one or two days per week. Musk has indicated that this arrangement will remain in place as long as it is deemed valuable by President Donald Trump, who appointed Musk to the role, and as long as the work serves a practical purpose.

According to White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, Musk is expected to step down from his government post by the end of spring 2025. The billionaire entrepreneur holds a temporary position within the U.S. government, and federal rules restrict him to working no more than 130 days a year in this capacity.

This announcement comes at a challenging moment for Musk, as Tesla grapples with financial difficulties. The company reported disappointing results for the first quarter of 2025, with automotive revenue plummeting by 20% compared to the same quarter last year. Moreover, Tesla’s net profit has been slashed by 71%, highlighting the intense pressure the company is currently facing.

Tesla is not only contending with internal financial struggles but also external competition. The company is seeing increased rivalry from Chinese electric vehicle manufacturers, who are offering more affordable alternatives. Additionally, Musk’s outspoken political views and his support for certain political parties have drawn criticism, particularly from European markets, where Tesla’s reputation has faced some damage.

Despite these difficulties, Musk remains resolute in his decision to reduce his government work and concentrate on turning Tesla’s fortunes around. By shifting his focus to Tesla, Musk hopes to reignite growth at the company and maintain its position as a leader in the electric vehicle market.

As Musk prepares to reduce his governmental duties, the next few months will be crucial in determining whether his shift in focus can steer Tesla back to profitability and secure its future in an increasingly competitive global market.
